The Sommers Twins: A Strategic Pick for Grand Canyon
John and Ethan Sommers, twin swimmers from Hillsboro, Oregon, have verbally committed to Grand Canyon University (GCU) for fall 2027. Both recorded personal bests at the Futures meet in Austin: John 26.73 in 50m backstroke, Ethan 2:22.69 in 200m breaststroke. They are expected to compete in the Big West Conference. When the crowd asks "Who will be the next star of American swimming?", I ask "Who is quietly building their roster?". The answer is not a name high on the national rankings, but twin brothers from Hillsboro, Oregon: John and Ethan Sommers. They have just given their verbal commitment to Grand Canyon University (GCU), a Big West Conference program, for fall 2027. This is not a transfer deal or a million-dollar contract; it is a systematic move – something I, after more than three decades of following sports, have learned to value more than any fleeting glory.
