When an analysis has no data: Vietnam table tennis and the need to build a sports information system

On April 22, 2026, a comprehensive analysis was handed to me with the ambition of evaluating a sports article. When I opened the stage-one result, I found a table full of “N/A” cells. No title. No source. No central viewpoint. No events. No subjects. The whole article was described as a formatted emptiness. For an analyst, that emptiness is more telling than a wrong conclusion. The analysis was divided into nine parts: technique and equipment, player data and head-to-head records, competition system and point rules, competitive landscape, governance, coaching staff and talent pipeline, risk surface, public narrative and industry spillover. Every part returned the same answer: insufficient information, unable to assess. This means that an article about sports cannot be confirmed as valuable without an underlying layer of source data. A good article is not one with many emotions. A good article must have verifiable foundations. Without player names, tournament names, match records or score statistics, what remains is only literature that imitates sport. I came to sports from an amateur spreadsheet. When I was seventeen, I sat in Da Nang and manually recorded every ball of the local football team. No Opta, no StatsBomb. Only an Excel sheet with self-made columns. That spreadsheet taught me a simple lesson: data does not need to be flashy, it just needs to be correct. But the price of being correct is higher than many imagine. It requires collection procedures, standardised classification, storage habits and a culture of verification. Football has slowly built these. Vietnamese table tennis still has very little. The empty analysis reflects that reality. In risk assessment, the phrase “no data available” is itself a form of risk. When I ran the Da Nang table tennis data warehouse, I learned that a system is strong only when it knows what is missing. Instead of buying expensive equipment or copying foreign training programmes, Vietnam should begin by building an open three-layer database: results from all official matches, basic performance indicators such as serve win rate, receive win rate and unforced errors, and junior scouting information. This does not require a huge budget. It requires a small team and a discipline of regular publication. The empty analysis gives us a chance to ask the reverse question: without data, how can Vietnamese table tennis grow? The answer is not to throw away the empty map. The answer is to keep it and start drawing every path. I choose that second path.
