Cong An Nhan Dan, Santos Thaileon and the foreign-player slot arithmetic before the October 15 deadline

The team sheet for Cong An Nhan Dan's opening fixture of the 2026-2027 First Division season, against Long An on September 11, left the foreign-player section blank. Before the season, the club formerly known as PVF-CAND had signed Santos Thaileon, the Brazilian striker who finished last season as the First Division's top scorer with 14 goals for Quy Nhon United. For a side chasing the title and promotion, that contract read like the final answer to the attack. Then coach Nguyen Duc Thang left him out of the matchday squad.

With no foreigner on the pitch, Cong An Nhan Dan still beat Long An 2-1 through a brace from substitute striker Nguyen Hoang Anh. An awkward win, but three points all the same. From the training ground to the empty stand, I count a team's heartbeat in mud-caked boots.

Immediately afterwards, the club added another foreigner: Gonzalo Fornari, 26, Brazilian, 2m01. He is the tallest foreign player currently active in either the First Division or the V-League. Last season Fornari played for Busan IPark in K-League 2 and scored seven goals. Cong An Nhan Dan host Hue at home in the National Cup qualifier on October 6. Five days later, on October 11, they travel to Khanh Hoa in round two of the First Division.

Squeezed between those two fixtures are two administrative cut-offs. The National Cup deadline for replacing and adding players falls at 15:00 on September 17. The First Division deadline is later: 15:00 on October 15. The coaching staff has roughly a month to decide which foreigner is registered for the main battleground, the competition that decides the promotion ticket.

Cong An Nhan Dan's real problem is splitting foreign-player slots between two competitions with two different deadlines. In the First Division, each club may register only a limited number of foreigners, and the National Cup list is a separate list. Holding two foreign strikers but fewer slots than men, the choice stops being about who is better and becomes about who fits the specific set of opponents over the next four rounds.

Santos Thaileon scored 14 goals last season, but those goals were born in a system built around him. Quy Nhon United structured their play around a single spearhead, and every attack flowed toward him. Moving to a title-chasing side, where opponents sit deep and concede territory, a lone striker loses the space to run into. He must receive with a defender tight on his back, facing away from goal, between two centre-backs already set. A striker's goal tally rarely survives the move from a lower-ranked team to a higher-ranked one.

Nguyen Hoang Anh showed the other side of the equation. A domestic forward, sent on when the game needed breaking open, scored twice in a match where the club fielded no foreigner. In the First Division, with its congested calendar, uneven pitches and high-intensity duels, domestic depth sometimes decides more than an expensive foreign name.

Gonzalo Fornari offers a different tactical option. At 2m01 he is a target for long balls, for corners and for set pieces. In a league where many teams accept a physical, clear-it-long, second-ball game, a tall centre-forward can open up a new approach: the ball goes forward early, the second line pushes up for knock-downs, and short combinations are replaced by duels won at the second point of contact.

Caution is warranted here.

Height is the easiest metric to measure and the easiest to misread. Looking back at the 2026-2026 season, Nam Dinh had a 2m06 striker in Kyle Hudlin of England. He scored twice in the 2026 Super Cup match Nam Dinh lost 3-2 to Cong An Ha Noi. He scored twice against the Vietnam national team in a 4-0 friendly win. He scored in the 3-1 defeat away to Gamba Osaka in the 2026-2026 AFC Champions League. Yet in the 2026-2026 V-League, Kyle Hudlin scored no goals in five matches and said his goodbyes early because of injury.

That teaches a lesson about reading data. Goals in friendlies, in continental competition or in a cup tie happen in the context of an open game, both teams attacking, defenders not tightly organised. A V-League or First Division match unfolds differently: the weaker side drops off, defenders mark tight, referees allow more contact, and crosses are usually cleared before the striker can rise. A tall forward still wins his aerial duels, but turning them into goals requires an entire structure around him: a crosser who hits the right rhythm, a runner arriving for the knock-down, and the patience to play that way for 90 minutes.

Based on my experience covering matches, most foreign strikers over 1m95 who arrive in Southeast Asia run into the same issue: they excel at the kind of ball this league produces least often. The First Division is not short of aerial balls, but most of them are defensive headers, clearances and midfield duels. A tall centre-forward who wants to shine needs teammates who deliberately deliver the ball into the box on script, and that only happens when the whole team believes in the script.

The opponents ahead also impose their own demands. Hue in the National Cup qualifier is a match Cong An Nhan Dan will dominate on the ball, and a tall centre-forward can be useful against a packed defence. The away trip to Khanh Hoa in round two of the First Division instead demands transition speed, movement and counter-attacking, qualities a 2m01 player rarely has an advantage in.

Two deadlines, two matches, two strikers, and a domestic attack currently playing well. For coach Nguyen Duc Thang in particular, this is the phase where every registration decision is a tactical gamble, because a First Division foreign-player list all but shapes a whole season's fate.

Transfers live in a player's eyes as he leaves the training ground, not in the numbers on a contract. I don't write about football; I write about the people wearing the shirts.

Over the next four rounds, the thing to watch is the registration list at 15:00 on September 17 for the National Cup, and then the final call before 15:00 on October 15. If Cong An Nhan Dan pick Fornari for the main battleground, the club is betting on an aerial script unproven in Vietnam. If they keep Santos Thaileon, the club is betting that a golden boot winner can relearn how to score inside a new system. And if they split the two across two separate lists, the real story of this season will sit elsewhere: the rotation capacity of a club that wants promotion without losing its identity.
